*(API) Artistic Point of Interference

API - (officially acronym for Application Programming interface) a set of functions and procedures that allow the creation of applications which access the features or data of an operating system, application, or other service.

*What does it mean to be a user of technology? As an artist or designer, how do you position yourself towards web services and digital platforms?

In this workshop we will collectively study online platforms and reflect on its implicit normalization and parameters in the form of situated fictions. Together we will work on alternative, discursive web application that will be situated through a fictional event. No programming experience is required, but please bring laptops / computers.

The majority of online platforms, including Facebook, Twitter and Google offer an API as a way for developers to connect to a product or service without a graphical user interface. The API provides access to the different functions of a web service through code. Although designed to prevent unexpected uses of the service and hide the internal workings of the system, the API can work as an interesting entrance for artists and designers: it offers the possibility to make your own critical interventions to the web service that is built and owned by a platform-based company.

We will take such an API as our Artistic Point of Interference and ask how artists and designers can disrupt or interfere with the user-service dichotomy of popular web platforms. By responding to this protocol of data transfer owned by a platform-based company, students will be encouraged to experiment with the idea of 'situatedness'. By challenging the current ways in which users interact with online platforms and articulating an intervention or interference we examine a critical artistic mode of interacting with platform services. At the end of the workshop the students will be asked to present their imagined interventions with APIs and perhaps some very small prototypes of proof of concepts will be developed to communicate the group's ideas. Hopefully the Artistic Point of Interference workshop will initiate some critical designs that engage with dominant platform monopolies in a practical and artistic way. The outcomes of the workshop will be archived as part of a series on 'situated fictions' - a research project into how artists can position themselves in the software-as-a-service loop.

The workshop resulted in some directly political experiments with twitter and the Dutch elections that were happening the day before. One student built a bot that would translate tweets from the far right PVV leader Geert Wilders into Arabic and re tweet them back at him (above). This 'hack' could be considered as more than antagonising twitter spam but articulates the issues of cultural communication between different continents and ethnicities, which is made even harder when reduced to 140 characters. Another mentionable project was the idea of 'Tweets4seats' which imagined a system for electorate representation based on the total amount of tweets. By simply counting the amount of tweets by every major leader, the student (Joes) was able to forecast the outcome of the national election based on each leader's social media efforts. There were other less political 'fictions' created and they were all archived here .

Gym of Obsolete Technology at W139 Gallery

29 January 2016

The Dial-up Choir will be performing at the opening of Gym of Obsolete Technology at W139 on Friday 29 January.

The intention for this exhibition is to visualize and give form to the tensions between the analogue and the digital that come into being during moments of transference, circumvention, and interference. Artists from the Netherlands, Europe, Mexico, and North America have been invited to collaborate and develop new work within the context of the exhibition. Through sculptural, video, sound, light, multimedia, and installation works, visitors can interact with the weight of obsolete technologies and explore the ways we interact with the digital and analogue frameworks around us.

Shifting Optics 3 at Upstream Gallery

30 January 2016

A group show with Aram Bartholl, Max Dovey, Constant Dullaart, Yu Honglei, Austin Lee and Jan Robert Leegte.

Upstream Gallery presents Shifting Optics III, a new edition in a series of signaling group exhibitions where the impact of digital culture on the visual arts is shown. In the first edition (2014), a new generation of artists was introduced. For this generation that grew up with computers, working in a hybrid method between analog and digital comes naturally. In the second edition (2015) recent developments were placed in dialogue with works by pioneers such as Peter Struycken and JODI, who were using computers and the Internet already in their art in the twentieth century. While the interface between art and computers is still relevant today, institutions and a wider audience now also recognize its urgency. With Shifting Optics III, Upstream Gallery continues its research within this rapidly transforming field by bringing together six artists who have embraced a digital working method. From different angles and in a variety of media, they reflect on the impact of computers on our collective consciousness.

H.I.T at V2

12 February 2016

H.I.T. (2016) stands for ‘Human Intelligence Tasks’ and refers to the human labour involved in the development of image recognition algorithms. To investigate the position of human labour in the production of algorithms, artists Max Dovey & Manetta Berends have adapted an automatic image tagging application into a participatory game show with cash prizes. In the game show, multiple teams compete to identify the human labour involved in the development of an image recognition algorithm.

Max Dovey and Manetta Berends investigate the social and political conditions in which big data, machine learning and artificial intelligent systems are produced. Through a series of publications and performances, they aim to catalogue the promises of big data and perform the social mechanisms that produce automation. Both Max Dovey as well as Manetta Berends are recent graduates of the Media Design & Communication department at the Piet Zwart Institute and founded a research group to critically reflect on the outcomes and implications of algorithmic production.

Upcoming: Talk at Node+Code

04. October 2015

I will be presenting and performing some of the work I have been doing with Computer Vision. My recent performance projects have contributed and disrupted the development of computer vision software and image tagging applications. By looking at performance works as case studies I will map an overview on the different ways in which computer vision software is developed from visual data sets to training models and real world applications. Looking at specific examples of subjective bias in algorithmic software that derive from the often obscured role of human labor in dominant modes of algorithmic production. The presentation won't be longer than an hour and will have some live examples and demos of performance works.
